The Jewel of the Borneo Banks - Hammerheads encounter at Layang Layang

Known as ‘The Jewel of the Borneo Banks’, Layang Layang has created for itself a calm lagoon which teems with wildlife. As many as 13 coral reefs have formed here, creating a magnetic underwater scenery. Diving is the pinnacle of Layang Layang’s beautiful experience – expect a vacation like no other on this isolated atoll.

Layang Layang is an atoll of 14 sq km in diameter, jutting 2,000 metres from the depths of the South China Sea. In 1985, the Malaysian Federal Government began reclamation works and created a 50-acre island on one part of the reef.

Thus, what is ardently known to East Malaysians as "Terumbu Layang Layang" or "Swallow's Reef" has now become Layang Layang Island.

May is known as the best diving season for Layang Layang where school of Hammerheads are usually spotted. Layang Layang is also famous for spotting of manta rays, schooling Jacks, schooling Devil Rays (spotted by Bummies Elvin, Tat and Caryn last year May 2007), macrolife such as pygmy seahorse and not forgetting over the years visibility from 20 – 40 metres.
