At the mention of Sharks Fin, banquet wedding dinners, chinese festival or big occasion family dinners comes to mind doesn't it? But the question is, Should we be eating sharks fin soup?
I don't know about you but I certainly don't think so! Diver or non-diver, the answer is NO.
Recently "someone" (no names mentioned but some of you can guess who) answered me with the following:-
** It was already cooked, if don't eat sayang oh...
** I didn't buy it
** How about chicken or fish? Same thing mah.. (no its not the same thing when every part gets consumed)
** Fins grow back (NO they do not!!)
** Other fish can eat the shark meat left behind
Think of all the sharks finned alive to meet the demands of the market. Did you know that their fins are cut off and they are dumped back into the ocean lying on the sea bed handicapped, unable to do anything but await their death? Either bleeding to death, drowning or eaten alive by other fish. Can you picture it? It is estimated that 100 million sharks are killed annually. Nobody knows the actual figure with so many killings unreported.
Did you know that sharks fins consumed alone are tasteless? Its the soup, the chicken stock that puts the flavour in the soup! So why not drink a chicken soup instead? Do you even know the cooking process - drying and bleaching. There's NIL nutritional value and what's more, it may even be harmful to health in the long term with high mercury content levels! Mercury is a neurotoxin that can cause extensive damage to the nervous system and to foetus.
On top of that overfishing of sharks poses a significant threat to the marine ecosystems, a decline in the shark population and it also has serious consequences on the other species.
Bummies, DO YOUR PART NOW! Say NO to that nutrition-less, taste-less bowl of shark fin soup!
